Fedex's Employment Practices

FedEx claimed that it had uniform policies and practices with respect to employment and followed them throughout the company without any bias (Refer Exhibit IV for FedEx's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics). Transfers (movement of employees from one facility to another) were encouraged by the company as the jobs and the duties were the same for all the employees at all the facilities.

FedEx was divided into divisions and geographical regions. The vice presidents of operations for each division acted as the head of a region. The regions were again divided into districts, which were headed by managing directors. These managing directors reported directly to the vice presidents. The districts had distribution or service centers which were run by the senior managers. These senior managers reported to the managing directors. The operations managers of the centers reported to the senior managers. The corporate headquarters supervised the working of the regions. All the decisions regarding appointment of hourly employees were taken by the operations managers. All the decisions pertaining to the operations managers were made by the senior managers...

Allegations of Racial Discrimination Against Fedex

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, several racial discrimination suits were filed against FedEx in the US federal court. The plaintiffs charged FedEx with discrimination in performance evaluations, compensation, promotion and discipline.

Richard Tisdale Vs FedEx

Richard Tisdale (Tisdale), an African-American male employee worked as a handler and ramp transport driver at the Nashville Distribution station of FedEx during 1996-2000. In 1998, Tisdale complained to the management that he was not paid for attending the driver training program while the company had made payments to white employees. He also alleged that the African-American employees were passed over for promotion and advancement to other positions. He said that about 30 of the employees at the station were African-Americans and none of them had become supervisors. Reacting to Tisdale's complaints, the company sent an investigator to look into the practices of discrimination at the station...
